Medication is an important form of treatment when managing mental health problems.

Medication can be very helpful (effective) in managing conditions and helping to maintain positive mental health.

However it should never be seen as the only form of treatment.

There are lots of websites about medication that are very helpful most of the ones highlighted on this page are easy read.

There are a number of 'talking therapies' (see next page for more information) as well as medicines that should be available to people with a learning disability who are suffering from mental ill health.

Medication has been in the press (on TV/radio and the newspapers) recently. Research has said that some medications have 'little effect' on depression. However it is important that if yopu are taking any medication you check with your GP before stopping taking it. Read the BBC News report here or the Mental Health Foundation response here

A number of websites and sources of information are highlighted on this page that will provide details of specifc medicines and useful workbooks that will help with medicine management.

Any medication prescribed should be discussed with the person who has prescribed it. This should be done in a form that the individual and those supporting them can understand. Discussions can also take place with a local pharmacist about specific medicines.

Medicine must be seen within the wider aspects of the individuals health and any potential side effects monitored and recorded. All medication should be regularly reviewed by medication professionals.

The Valuing People website has a specific section on health and Health Action Plans that all people with a learning disability should have.

The Norah Fry Centre have completed a project around medicines and people with a learning disability and mental health.

This produced some very useful workbooks that will help with the management of medication

Birmingham University have a useful resource explaining a number of medicines in an easy read format (an audio version is also available)
