Challenging Behaviour

People with a learning disability sometimes display what is called 'challenging behaviour'.

The reasons for these behaviours needs to be investigated by families, staff and medical professionals.

There may be physical health reasons, it may indicate possible abuse, distress or unhappiness at their situation. It may be an important form of communication for someone with limited communication skills.

Mental ill health may be the cause of the challenging behaviour but it is not the only possible reason.

There are links to various resources and websites on this page which will provide more information on challenging behaviour.

You can download a file here called 10 Things you can do to support a person with difficult behaviours. This was developed by David Pitonyak who is an American who works in this area. His website can be accessed here.
