Ethnicity
(To see a full sized version of this image click here)
When a person and their family come from a minority community they can have more problems getting services.
Families are often unaware of what support and services are available and information about these may not be available in their own language.
The family may have had negative contact with services in the past, in particular mental health services.
The Department of Health, have set up the Delivering Race Equality project to look at ethnicity and mental health services.
There may be other cultural issues, including perceptions of mental health that may vary with those of the professionals and the services they offer that means many services are culturally inappropriate and go unused. The numbers of people from BME communities is increasing so services should be aware of the issues.
